Sydney City Dog Walks
Posted by Wolf & I Co. on Aug 26, 2021
In the heart of Sydney’s CBD there are endless walks, hidden cafes and great dog friendly parks to explore all with world class views. We asked Alma @alma_the_lappie and her hoomans to share some of their daily walks and adventures, where they like to explore, the best dog friendly cafes and any extra places they like to explore along the way.
Glebe Foreshore, Barangaroo to Sydney Opera House
This is a great city walk, and one of our favourites with plenty to explore! The entire walk is around 10km starting from Federal Park and ending at The Sydney Opera House. It can be split up into three separate walks as outlined below or if you’re feeling up for it go on and complete the entire walk which carries on over the Harbour Bridge and ends up in beautiful Kirribilli.
Glebe Foreshore Loop
This is our regular walk as it is a complete 6km loop. We start on Saunders Street, Pyrmont at the walk/cycle track entrance to Anzac Bridge.
Tip: If you have a sensitive dog keep in mind there’s usually very heavy, loud traffic on the bridge.
Exit the bridge at the first exit (if you are walking past a large building on your right then you have gone too far!) Follow the stairs down and keep left instead of walking under the bridge. This part of the walk isn’t the prettiest, it weaves through the Marina area with lots of trucks but it’s worth it for the rest of the walk.
Follow James Craig Road onto The Crescent and follow this all the way to Federal Park which has a large off-leash area including a large beach for the dogs to play and explore. Tip: Check tide times, if the tide is out, there will be mini beaches for your dog to play on all the way around the foreshore.
If you’re hungry head over to the Tramshed for lots of great food including Butcher and the Farmer which is dog friendly on their outside seating or equally grab take away food, there is plenty to choose from and its great to take a picnic back to the park on the water front.
Follow the water along and walk back toward Pyrmont enjoying many coves and beaches along the way, most of which are off leash and all dog friendly! There is a large section that is off-leash walking, check the signs as you go. We love this as it’s great to train Alma off-leash around other dogs. When you come to the end of the path onto Bridge Road keep left and this will take you back to Pyrmont. Explore the fish market, it has some great food and is dog friendly in the outside seating area or head up onto Pyrmont’s High Street. Gallon is our favourite dog friendly place with great food and wine with the cutest courtyard all undercover and The Terminus Hotel is also a great pub with a dog friendly courtyard.
Pyrmont to Barangaroo Reserve
From the Pyrmont Fish Market, head onto Bank Street under the Anzac Bridge leading to Pyrmont's water front. The water front is an on-leash area the whole way but has little parks to explore as you go. Find Giba Park up a stair well from Pirrama Park, stroll over a beautiful viewing bridge to the best view for an off-leash dog park!
Tip: It’s not fenced but has quiet side streets and amazing views of the harbour and city during the day and night.
Keep following the water around Pirrama Park and explore some of the wharves and little hidden cafes along the way until you arrive at Darling Harbour. Darling Harbour has some cool water features to explore with your dog and some great bars and restaurants. We have found a lot of places are dog friendly with outside seating if you ask the bar staff first but our favourite watering hole is Beer DeLuxe, it has a great beer selection and a good pub menu. Carry on around Darling Harbour to Barangaroo Reserve and enjoy the harbour views.
Barangaroo Reserve to Sydney Oprah House
Barangaroo Reserve has just opened its connecting path from Darling Harbour into Barangaroo Reserve and what a great addition to the city it is. Walk past the new Crown Casino and along the water front to find sandstone steps leading down into the water most of the way around the Reserve. We love these sandstone steps and ignore the main path altogether to explore along them. If the tide is out you can even find mini beaches and let your dog have a paddle, Alma spends hours sniffing her way along taking in new and exciting smell the water has left behind. There is a perfect park area if you take the long stairwell up high into the Reserve with incredible views out over the harbour and secret pathways leading off onto the hill surrounding the reserve.
Heading out of Barangaroo Reserve wander around the piers for some coffee shops and food places, but if you want the best view with a pint head to Squires Landing. Ensure you take the last path to the left just after the last pier and find a small stairwell at the end leading down to a quiet spot to take in the Harbour Bridge
Tip: This is a great spot for a photo
From here you can walk along the water front to Squire’s Landing through Hickson Road Reserve. The seating outside to the left of Squire’s Landing gives you a front row seat and uninterrupted views of the Sydney Opera House. From here you can see the route needed to visit the Opera House.
If trekking on to Kirribilli, Squire’s Landing is close to the Sydney Harbour Bridge to hike over, catch the ferry back to Circular Quay which is right next to the Opera House.
Bonus! The Sydney Harbour Bridge to Kirribilli
Explore the Rocks on your way up to the Harbour Bridge walk, a great pub in the Rocks with a cool dog friendly garden is Endeavour Tap Room, great beer and really good deals on food and drinks. Find the walk way onto the bridge and enjoy the amazing views.
Tip: It’s surprisingly high here! Alma was unsure at first especially with the cars passing too.
Kirribilli has incredible parks and walkways to explore and get lost in, but my personal favourite place in Kirribilli/Lavender Bay is the magical Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden. This tranquil garden in the heart of the city is something else. It’s completely dog friendly (on-leash area) and so beautifully maintained, this little haven is a must to explore, it has a touching back story too!
