Why Choosing The Right Dog Leash Matters

There’s no “one size fits all” when it comes to dog leashes.

The right leash can help:

  • Improve walking control
  • Support dog training
  • Reduce pulling behaviour
  • Increase safety in busy environments
  • Create a more relaxed walking experience
  • Give your dog the right amount of freedom

Different leash lengths and materials suit different dogs, walking styles, and environments.

Below, we break down some of the best dog leashes in Australia and when to use them.

1. Short Dog Training Leash | Best For Puppy Training & Control

A short dog training leash is one of the most practical tools for puppy training and high-control situations.

At approximately 1.5ft long, these heavy duty dog training leashes help keep your dog close while improving focus and leash manners.

Best Uses For A Short Dog Training Leash

  • Puppy training
  • Heel training
  • Busy footpaths
  • Vet visits
  • Keep reactive dogs close
  • Car parks and crowded areas
  • Kids walking the dog

Short dog leashes are especially helpful when teaching loose lead walking and maintaining close control in public spaces.

Wolf & I Co. short dog training leashes feature:

  • Reinforced dual-ply nylon webbing
  • Reflective weave for night walks
  • Neoprene padded handles
  • Secure screw gate locking carabiners
  • Heavy duty stainless steel hardware

If you’re training a puppy or need maximum control, a short dog leash is a must-have.

"I got the White Lines training leash when George was a puppy to train him around the city streets and for puppy school, but even now he's fully grown, it still gets plenty of use! Great for for getting him in/out the car, vet visits, walks on busy streets - anything where I need him close but an extra hand free is a must". ~ Tori

2. Four Foot Rope Dog Leash | Best Everyday Dog Leash

The 4ft rope dog leash is one of the best all-round leash lengths for everyday dog walking.

At approximately 120cm long, it provides enough freedom for your dog while maintaining excellent control during walks.

Best Uses For A 4ft Dog Leash

  • Everyday walks
  • Café outings
  • Beach walks
  • Urban environments
  • Strong dogs
  • Dogs that pull

A shorter rope leash reduces excess slack while helping maintain better handling and control.

Wolf & I Co. rope dog leashes are built using:

  • High strength kernmantle rope
  • Secure screw gate locking carabiners
  • Lightweight weatherproof materials
  • UV resistant construction
  • Comfortable handling for long walks

For most dog owners, a 4ft leash is one of the most versatile options available.

"Nicely made and looks like it'll last a lifetime. The carabiner is a good one and more secure than the basic clips on most other leads, especially for our big, pully boi. This lead is far better than anything I could find at the big pet shops and I'm happier to buy from a small, Aussie company". ~ Danny

Love my camp wolf leash! I grab it out every morning to get going on adventures in style. My humans especially love the swivel carabiner for when I jump around in circles and don't get tangled. 5 stars! ~ Kona the Boxer

4. Six Foot Rope Dog Leash | Best Dog Leash For Freedom & Adventure

The classic 6ft dog leash is one of the most popular leash lengths for active dogs and outdoor adventures, and we find that our range of six foot leashes are super popular but this doesn't mean that the six foot bad boy is suitable for every dawg.

Here's why: At six feet long this leash gives your dog so much more freedom! Room to explore and sniff, you name it your dog will have more lee-way to reach it, including those chips that someone dropped on the footpath!

A longer leash gives your dog more freedom to sniff, explore, and move naturally while still remaining safely connected.

The six foot leash should provide a little slack, and in most cases, dogs are less likely to pull when presented with it, however, ensuring your dog is loose leash trained will help significantly. Something to remember when using this leash, keep the slack off the ground to prevent tripping and tangling.

New dog owners keep in mind, it's definitely a longer leash for a non-trained dog so be aware that you may be reeling the length in to gain control.

Best Uses For A 6ft Dog Leash

  • Parks
  • Hiking trails
  • Beach walks
  • Bush walks
  • Outdoor adventures
  • Loose leash trained dogs

Longer leashes can help reduce tension during walks, though proper loose leash training is still important.

Wolf & I Co. 6ft rope dog leashes are designed for:

  • Active dogs
  • Adventure lifestyles
  • Strong pulling dogs
  • Outdoor durability
  • Comfortable long-distance handling

If your dog loves to explore, a 6ft leash provides the perfect balance of freedom and control.

"From the minute I received my package to going on a walk with my border collie, I knew this lead and collar was amazing quality and will last a long time! My Jasper pulls so much and I love that I feel like I have control when using this lead but it also allows him to venture further with the length. I also love how I can support my Australian family!" ~ Claire

What Is The Best Material For A Dog Leash?

Before you even start to look, we suggest that no matter what kind of leash you choose, it should be well-made with a secure clasp and comfortable for you to use. Below we outline some of the materials you could consider for your dogs leash.

Nylon Leashes

A strong, anti-fade, weather friendly material is a good choice. Not only is this material lightweight, odour resistant and easily washable it folds up simply which makes it a handy option to have as a 'spare' in your car or in a travel bag, it's also compact enough to stash in your pocket. Be sure to choose a nylon dog leash that has a secure clip. We especially like the lightweight, aluminium swivel carabiners that don't rust.

If this sounds like the leash for you, check out our Cafe Series featuring  5ft nylon dog leashes with swivel clips and matching puppy collars and dog collars.

Rope Dog Leashes

Strong, lightweight, weatherproof, mould and mildew resistant and water friendly. That's a lot of benefits! This rope is made for dog leashes so when combined with a sturdy screw gate carabiner clip – it's a safe and secure choice as well. Owners with active dogs tend to choose this material as it's comfortable in the hand while walking. Rope dog leashes don't require a great deal of maintenance and are easy to wash and hang dry, making this style of leash one of our firm favourites!

Reflective Dog Leashes For Night Walks

If you're highly active and like to beat the 9am rush on the footpath, choose a dog leash with reflective weave and ensure your dog is visible during early morning and late evening walks and adventures. It can make all the difference when walking by busy roads and a bit of high vis at night looks cool too!

What Is The Worst Material For A Dog Leash?

Chain Link - Stainless Steel

A strong, bite proof material for serious chewers! These are however often heavy and the jingle jangle and weight of this style lead can be cumbersome to use when walking. Not our first choice for obvious reasons. Puppies do tend to chew though, for a year or more, so if you're concerned with leash turnover, choose a leash that will survive those seriously sharp teeth.

Cotton Leashes

Although cotton looks similar to climbing rope, it's not the best performer in our eyes, as when it gets wet, it becomes a heavy, soggy mess which then leads to the breakdown of the cotton.
