5 Reasons Why You Need A Short Dog Training Leash
Posted by Wolf & I Co. on Mar 14, 2024
Short dog leashes for training or everyday dog walking are a handy, portable leash that can provide more control than longer leashes.
If your dog is unpredictable or is always pulling on the leash then keeping them close with a short training leash could be the solution.
First and foremost, this length is ideal for keeping your pup close to you when training. We find it greatly assists in teaching your dog to heel.
If you have kids and they like to walk the dog themselves, it's a very good length for them to use as there is no slack to hold. This also makes it especially handy in providing added control during close encounters like on busy footpaths, carparks, or going to the vet.
And like us, you might want to have one in the car on standby 24/7.
Here are our top five reasons for using a short dog leash on your everyday dog walks.
- Walking by your side. The short length means your dog is extra close to you. If you’re finding that your dog is constantly pulling away from you, or making you lunge forward this leash will put a stop to that. The less room you give your dog to get distracted the easier it will be to have your dog walk next to you, making it easier for them to learn to walk by your side.
- Best for kids. A short dog leash is perfect for children as they can handle the dog with confidence during your daily dog walk. The 1.5ft leash length will keep your dog close to them, stop them from pulling away and therefore will give children more confidence to take control of the dog walking.
- Better control. On the topic of control, this is where the quality design is a highlight. The neoprene padded handle is super comfortable for your to loop your hand and grip the leash if required to react to a lunging or reactive dog. They are close to hear your commands and to take rewards which means you will be better equipped to take control.
- Lightweight and compact. The compact size means it’s easy to store.Easily tuck your short dog leash away in the back of the car seat or in the car door, so you know have a spare dog leash on hand if you forget one.
- Give them space, If your dog tends to be shy, is aggressive or needs to be kept away from other dogs on the footpath this is the leash for you.
But don't just take our word for it! We recently chatted with Bonnie who has been using the short dog leash for training with her golden retriever puppy, Louie.
How do you use your training leash with your puppy?
We use the training leash for 20 minutes each evening with our 4-month-old pup. When we get this leash out he recognises that it is ‘training time’ and focuses on us really well.
It is comfortable to use and it keeps him on one side and nice and close, which teaches him to mimic that on our other walks. The difference it has made to his regular walks is incredible.
Why did you choose a short training leash?
I originally chose it because I wanted a short leash for my kids to use with our puppy, Louie, as they tended to give Louie the whole length of his leash when walking him. This wasn’t really safe near roads or in crowded areas. Once I received the training leash, however, I realised it had much more benefits! Louie behaved differently as soon as I attached the leash to his harness and he stayed close to me, with the leash still loose. As Louie has grown (he’s nearly 5 months now), he has become more enthusiastic on walks, so consistent heal training with the training leash has been really beneficial.
Did you look around for others before choosing a Wolf & I Co. short training leash?
No, I already had some beautiful Wolf & I Co. gear and after my first purchase, I added quite a few things to my wish list!
What are your thoughts on the quality of the leash?
I can’t fault it. The neoprene handle is really comfortable and the length is perfect - it’s short enough to keep Louie close to me but still long enough for loose leash walking. The carabiner is really strong as well, so pup is nicely secure.
Tell us about the rest of your Wolf & I Co. gear.
Louie has had the Gaucho collar and leash since he was really little, and the pattern goes so nicely with his golden fur. He also has the black reflective harness. We get comments on this all the time - the handle is so useful with a playful puppy at the dog beach!
The multiple attachment points are really useful too - we use a different one for walking and for the seatbelt (we have the co-pilot seatbelt too) - yep I’m a total Wolf & I Co. covert! We also use the 4 foot rope leash for beach trips because it’s so tough and hard-wearing. Louie is now in a medium collar and harness, and I think it’s safe to say he’ll stay in Wolf & I Co gear until he’s an XL pup! ~ Bonnie

I got the White Lines training leash when George was a puppy to train him around the city streets and for puppy school, but even now he's fully grown, it still gets plenty of use! Great for for getting him in/out the car, vet visits, walks on busy streets - anything where I need him close but an extra hand free is a must. ~ Tori
